He was a native of the Owari clan, and for a time was a devotee of Buddhism, but decided to pursue painting and studied under Yamamoto Baiitsu, Nakabayashi Chikudo, later Mizutani Seikoku and Tanomura Chokunyu. He taught many students and became a member of the Tokai Art Association.
