He is also known by another name, 白崖窟 Hakkeikutsu, but is more widely known as 南天棒 (Nantenbo). He is known as one of the most powerful monks of the Meiji period, who always carried a Nanten stick with him. He visited Zen temples all over the country and beat monks in training without mercy. He traveled all over the country, challenging even his masters to Zen battles. He went to as many as twenty-five dojos, and if he found someone inexperienced, he would beat him mercilessly with a Nantian stick. At a time when telephones and telegraphs were inadequate, rumors of the arrival of the Nantenbo had some people trembling with fear. He also devoted himself to teaching the laity, and his influence was felt by such figures as 山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu, 乃木希典 Nogi Maresuke, and 児玉源太郎 Kodama Gentaro.

with signature 'Nantenbo' 南天棒 and seal 'Hakkeikutsu' 白崖窟 'Toshu' 鄧州

The verse compares a scarecrow that continues to hold its bow and arrow after the harvest to a figure that persists beyond necessity, and Nantenbō shapes that image with a brush that moves straight to its point, the strokes carrying the same uncompromising temperament that defined his life as a Rinzai monk who tested others with his Nanten staff. The seals Hakkeikutsu and Toshu and the signature “Nantenbō” anchor the work firmly within his mature period, when his calligraphy often fused blunt force with a stripped‑down clarity. The scroll itself shows extensive deterioration—stains, creases, tears, dirt, scribbling and other visible damage—evidence of long handling and storage rather than careful preservation, and it is offered on the basis of Nantenbō’s historical importance rather than physical condition, which should be understood as extremely poor before purchase.

Whole dimensions: 18" W x 75.3" H / 45.9cm x 191.5cm
Inside dimensions: 11.3" W x 47.2" H / 28.9cm x 120cm

Material: White Satin
Technique: Handpainted
Roller ends: Wood

Weight: 320g

Condition

Antique items have originally crease, stain, damage, and more.
