It is considered an auspicious phrase, particularly for merchants and businesses, symbolizing prosperity and success. Yamaoka Tesshu was known for his generosity in creating calligraphy and is said to have gladly written works whenever someone requested them. Therefore, it is possible that this calligraphy was written at the request of a merchant, perhaps as a wish for a thriving and prosperous business. Interestingly, although Tesshu sometimes received money in return for his calligraphy, he reportedly never kept it for himself. Instead, he would immediately give it away to poor and needy people. As a result of his extraordinary generosity and selflessness, he is said to have lived much of his life in extreme poverty despite his fame and reputation.

山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888)
A famous samurai of the Bakumatsu period, who played an important role in the Meiji Restoration.
