He is known as one of the last literati painters in Japan. At the age of nine, he learned under 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and studied Nanga and 唐詩選 Toshisen (selected Chinese poetry). He also studied a wide range of subjects, including Kokugaku, Yomei, and martial arts. He was loved by Chikuden for his talent and became his adopted son. 高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1804-1835) and 帆足杏雨 Hoashi Kyou (1810-1884) were senior brothers. In 1878, he established the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and became its first principal.
