His father died early in the following year, Kansei 7. He studied painting under Murakami Toshu 村上東洲 and later Ganku 岸駒. He then spent some time in Nagasaki before going to Edo (now Tokyo), where he was taught by Tani Buncho 谷文晁, a painter of the Shijo school.
