Born in Takeya-cho, Muromachi, Kyoto. Grandfather was Mochizuki Gyokusen 望月玉蟾, a painter of the Mochizuki school, and father was Mochizuki Gyokusen 望月玉川. His son is 望月玉渓 Mochizuki Gyokkei (1874-1938) . From the age of six he was taught painting by his grandfather, from the age of 16 he learnt painting from his father, and poetry from Iwagaki Rokuzo.
