Ông mất ở tuổi 85, năm 1875 tại 神光院 Jinkoin.

với chữ ký 'Rengetsu' 蓮月

Kích thước tổng thể: 26,2" W x 48,4" H / 66,6cm x 123cm
Kích thước bên trong: Rộng 18,3" x Cao 10,7" / 46,7cm x 27,3cm

Chất liệu: Giấy
Kỹ thuật: Vẽ tay
Đầu con lăn: Gỗ
Trọng lượng: 1630g bao gồm cả hộp

Tình trạng

Các mặt hàng cổ ban đầu có nếp nhăn, vết bẩn, hư hỏng, v.v. His paintings can be said to be a new development of the rich decorative qualities of Sotatsu's paintings, with a superb sense of form and a keen eye for nature. The work is by Nagasaka Unzai (1848–1906), a noted painter of the late Edo to Meiji period, known for his poetic and literati-style landscapes. The plum blossoms symbolize resilience and renewal, blooming in early spring after winter’s chill. The boat and watermill evoke themes of journey, quiet labor, and harmony with nature, while the country houses suggest peaceful rural life and nostalgic simplicity. Unzai studied under Nakanishi Kōseki and traveled through China, absorbing classical techniques and infusing his works with spiritual depth and refined brushwork. This scroll is accompanied by a storage box, ensuring safe preservation and presentation. The composition features a red pagoda nestled among lush foliage, with misty mountains rising in the background — a tranquil scene rendered in soft, harmonious tones. The title inscribed on the box, “Tōzan Shunshoku” (東山春色), translates to “Spring Colors of the Eastern Hills”, referring to the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. This area, rich in temples, gardens, and cultural heritage, has long inspired artists and poets as a symbol of seasonal renewal and spiritual calm. Hirai Baisen, active in the Taishō and Shōwa periods, was known for his lyrical landscapes and refined brushwork. His paintings often reflect a deep sensitivity to nature’s rhythms and a classical Japanese aesthetic rooted in harmony and restraint. The scroll is housed in its original double tomobako (wooden storage box) — an inner and outer box set — which adds significant value and provenance, indicating careful preservation and formal presentation. The composition balances delicacy and depth, with pale blossoms emerging from subtly toned branches, while the moon’s diffused presence creates a quiet, contemplative atmosphere suggestive of early spring and the fleeting beauty of the season. The muted palette and controlled use of negative space allow the viewer’s eye to rest, embodying a refined aesthetic closely associated with classical Japanese painting. The work is signed and sealed “Kensui”, and while little emphasis is placed on the artist, the brush technique and compositional sensitivity reflect a practiced hand attuned to poetic nuance rather than overt display. The scroll is mounted in a traditional format with wooden roller ends and is accompanied by its original tomobako, indicating careful preservation. As is typical for antique works, there are age-related conditions including light staining, minor creases, folds, slight warping, and staining to the reverse of the mounting; these are consistent with age and use and do not detract from the overall calm presence and appreciation of the painting.

Whole dimensions: 20.1" W x 75.1" H / 51.3cm x 191cm
Inside dimensions: 12.9" W x 43" H / 32.8cm x 109.3cm

Material: Paper
Technique: Handpainted
Roller ends: Wood

Weight: 700g including Original Box (Tomobako)

Condition

Antique items have originally crease, stain, damage, and more. Yosa Buson is famous as one of the three great masters of haikai (Haiku poets) in the Edo period, along with 松尾芭蕉 Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) and 小林一茶 Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828). Born into a farming family, he lost his parents when he was a teenager and set out for Edo (now Tokyo) at the age of 20. In Edo, he learned haikai from 早野巴人 Hayano Hajin (1676-1742). After his master's death, he traveled around Kanto and Oshu, and then moved to Kyoto. His haikai style is full of realism, romance, and lyricism, and he became a central figure in the haikai circles of the middle age. He is also an excellent painter, and along with 池大雅 Ike no Taiga (1723-1776), is considered a great master of literati painting.

with signature 'Choko' 長庚 and seal 'Sanka koji' 三果居士 'Tosei' 東成

A masterful ink painting of a blossoming plum tree rendered in suiboku style, this hanging scroll by Yosa Buson (1716–1784) exemplifies the poetic depth and literati elegance for which he is celebrated. The gnarled trunk and delicate blossoms are executed with expressive brushwork and tonal subtlety, evoking both the resilience of winter and the quiet anticipation of spring. Above the signature appears the inscription “擬 呉文仲”, indicating Buson’s respectful emulation of the Chinese painter Wu Wen-zhong, whose style he admired and adapted—an homage that reflects Buson’s deep engagement with Chinese literati traditions. Signed “Chōko” (長庚) and sealed “Sanka Koji” (三果居士) and “Tosei” (東成), the scroll bears Buson’s mature artistic identity, blending haikai sensibility with painterly lyricism. As one of the three great haiku masters of the Edo period—alongside Matsuo Bashō and Kobayashi Issa—Buson’s visual art shares the same realism, romance, and seasonal nuance that define his poetry. This work, accompanied by a box, stands as a rare and refined example of mid-Edo literati painting, where brush, verse, and reverence for tradition converge in quiet brilliance.

Whole dimensions: 17.1" W x 76.7" H / 43.5cm x 194.9cm
Inside dimensions: 12" W x 52.4" H / 30.5cm x 133.2cm

Material: Paper
Technique: Handpainted
Roller ends: Wood

Weight: 490g including Box

Condition

Antique items have originally crease, stain, damage, and more.
