Formerly a samurai of the Fukuoka domain in Chikuzen. Studied Nanshu painting under 村田東圃 Murata Tohno (1802-1865) and later 石丸春牛 Ishimaru Shungyu (1793-1860). After the Meiji Restoration, he moved to Osaka and became a leading figure in the Osaka Nanga circles. He excelled in Sansui landscapes, flowers and birds, and was particularly good at bamboo groves.
