He exhibited his works at the Paris Exposition of 1878 and the Amsterdam Exposition of 1883, where he was awarded a prize. He was probably the first Japanese painter to travel to Europe. After returning to Japan, he created flower-and-bird paintings with Western-style textures and was awarded a high prize at the 1904 World's Columbian Exposition in St. Louis. He was highly acclaimed in Europe and the United States. His works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the British Museum.
