飯塚竹斎 Iizuka Chikusai (1796-1861)
A painter of the southern style who was a samurai of the Tsuyama clan during the late Edo period. He was born in a samurai residence within the Tsuyama clan's lower residence in Edo. He showed talent for painting from an early age and was taught by Kojima Sekiryō, a samurai of the Tsuyama clan. At the age of 16, he studied under Hirose Taizan, and through Taizan's introduction, he also studied under Tani Buncho in Edo. He was a representative painter of Tsuyama and had a great influence on younger artists.
