Kano Hogai 狩野芳崖
狩野芳崖 Kano Hogai (1828-1888)
Japanese painter of the early Meiji period. After learning from his father who was a Kano school painter, he studied under Kano Shosen. He lived in poverty for a long time, but was recognized by Fenollosa and Okakura Tenshin, and became famous for his paintings. His painting style was an eclectic blend of the rigorous brushwork of the early Kano school and the composition and colors of Western oil painting.
