Kawabata Ryushi 川端龍子
川端龍子 Kawabata Ryushi (1885-1966)
Japanese painter and haiku poet of the Taisho and Showa periods. Born in Wakayama Prefecture. He first intended to paint Western-style paintings, and he went to the United States for studying painting but switched to Japanese-style painting after he returned to Japan. He was a unique figure in the Japanese painting world with his Western-style brush strokes. Although a Japanese-style painter, he painted genre-bending works, large, non-standard paintings, and he constantly challenged himself to break out of the conventional framework of the painting.
