Kawai Gyokudo 川合玉堂

川合玉堂 Kawai Gyokudo (1873-1957)
Born in Aichi Prefecture. Studied under 望月玉泉 Mochizuki Gyokusen (1834-1913), 幸野楳嶺 Kono Bairei (1844-1895), and 橋本雅邦 Hashimoto Gaho (1835-1908). He painted Japanese nature with poetic sentiment in harmony with the Kano school and the Shijo school and pioneered a new aspect of landscape painting. He became Judge of the official exhibition, Professor at Tokyo Art School. He was a leading figure in Japanese-style painting at the Kanten. In 1931, he was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government, and in 1933, he was awarded the First Class Honorary Medal of the Red Cross by the German government.
