菊川英山 Kikukawa Eizan (1787-1867)
He was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. Following the death of Kitagawa Utamaro, the master who defined an era with his portraits of beautiful women, it was Kikukawa Eizan who ushered in a new era of beauty painting. Depicting town maidens, courtesans and various other women with grace and style, he swiftly became a sensation in the world of ukiyo-e.
