Mizusawa Nanpo 水澤南芳

水澤南芳 Mizusawa Nanpo (1860-1914)
Female Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Saizu-mura, Echigo Mishima-gun, the fourth daughter of Soichiro Satomasa (village chief). She took the name Nanpo and Shoran. She excelled at painting from an early age. At first, she studied flower and figure painting under Katayama Suikoku, and later under Taki Katei. He also studied under Kusakabe Meikaku and had a good knowledge of Chinese classics. He was a close friend of Noguchi Shohin, and together they were invited to teach painting at the Kazoku Girls' School. He later taught at Tokyo Jogakkan.
