Nakabayashi Chikkei 中林竹渓
中林竹渓 Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816-1867)
Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Eldest son of 中林竹洞 Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853). Studied painting under his father and 山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856). He adopted the Western style of painting, mainly sketching, and his brushwork was sharp. He was also known for his eccentricities. In his later years, he became a Buddhist monk and lived to conceal himself from the world.
