Nakajima Raisho 中島来章
中島来章 Nakajima Raisho (1796-1871)
Painter of the late Edo period and early Meiji period. Born in Otsu, Omi province (Shiga prefecture). He first studied painting under 渡辺南岳 Watanabe Nangaku (1767-1813) and later became a pupil of 円山応瑞 Maruyama Ozui (1766-1829). He became the greatest painter of the Maruyama school at the end of the Edo period. Together with 岸連山 Kishi Renzan (1804-1859), 横山清暉 Yokoyama Seiki (1792-1864), 塩川文麟 Shiokawa Bunrin (1808-1877), he is regarded as one of the "Four Famous Heian School painters" of the late Edo period. He was a master of Sansui landscape, figure, flower-and-bird paintings. His pupil was 幸野楳嶺 Kono Umelei (1844-1895).
