Nakanishi Koseki 中西耕石

中西耕石 Nakanishi Koseki (1807-1884)
Nanga artist of the late Edo and Meiji periods. Born in Fukuoka to a potter, he studied the Shijo school under 松村景文 Matsumra Keibun (1779-1843) in Kyoto and then moved to Osaka to study under 篠崎小竹 Shinozaki Shochiku, a Chinese scholar. Later studied under 小田海僊 Oda Kaisen (1785-1862) in Kyoto. He excelled in Sansui landscapes, flowers, and birds. He became famous together with 日根対山 Hine Taizan (1813-1869) and 前田暢堂 Maeda Chodo (1817-1878). In 1882, he became a professor at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting.
