Onishi Keisai 大西圭斎

大西圭斎 Onishi Keisai (1773-1829)
Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Born in Edo. The Onishi family was a vassal of the Buzen Nakatsu domain for generations, and Keisai also lived at the Edo domain residence as a vassal of the Edo Zume domain and served the domain lord Masataka Okudaira. He liked the style of Nan-Pin Shen and studied under his father and son, So Shiseki and So Shizan. He also studied under their grandson, So Shikou. Later, he was introduced to Tani Buncho's Shazanro. He specialized in light-colored flower-and-bird paintings.
