大谷句佛 Otani Kubutsu (1875-1943)
Monk and haiku poet of the Meiji and Showa periods. He was the 23rd chief monk of the Otani sect of Shinshu. Count. Born in Kyoto. He was sickly from childhood and lost the use of one of his legs due to illness when he was 12 years old. Studied under Nanjo Fumio, Murakami Sensho, Inoue Enryo, and others. He also studied Japanese painting under Kono Bairei and Takeuchi Seiho. He was further influenced by Masaoka Shiki. He left many haiku during his lifetime, demonstrating his talent as a cultural figure and breaking new ground in the world of Japanese haiku.
