島地黙雷 Shimaji Mokurai (1838-1911)
Shimaji Mokurai was a priest of the Jōdo Shinshū Honganji School (Nishi Honganji) who was active during the Meiji era, and he was one of the figures who contributed most significantly to the reform of modern Japanese Buddhism and the establishment of the "separation of church and state (freedom of religion)." He was also known by the pen names Uden, Hokuhō, and Rokuroku Dojin.
