Sugai Baikan 菅井梅関
菅井梅関 Sugai Baikan (1784-1844)
Painter of the late Edo period. Born in Sendai. Studied painting under 根本常南 Nemoto Jonan in his hometown, and studied under 谷文晁 Tani Buncho (1763-1840) in Edo. Studied under 江稼圃 Kokaho in Nagasaki. Later, in Kyoto and Osaka, he associated with 頼山陽 Rai Sanyo (1781-1832), 篠崎小竹 Shiozaki Shochiku (1781-1851). He excelled in Sansui landscape painting with powerful brushstrokes and Sumi-ume (plum blossoms in India ink). He returned to his hometown and remained a bachelor for the rest of his life, committing suicide in his later years.
