南口閑粋 Minamiguchi Kansui (b1958)
A ceramic artist born in Osaka Prefecture. From 1978, he studied under the first-generation Miyagawa Koun. In 1985, he began studying under the 16th-generation Eiraku Zengoro. In 1989, he established his own kiln and revived ‘Somayama-yaki’, a style that had been popular but had fallen into disuse in what is now Shiga Prefecture during the late Edo period. His work is characterised by a vibrant style that incorporates traditional Kyoto-yaki techniques.

The tea bowl by Minamiguchi Kansui, working within the revived Somayama‑yaki tradition, depicts cormorant fishing by bonfire light, the bird, reeds, and rippling water rendered in confident brushwork with gold highlights that catch the surface like sparks; the bamboo grass motif softens the scene with a gentle rhythm, while the interplay of greens, reds, and metallic accents reflects his Kyoto‑yaki training under Miyagawa Kōun and Eiraku Zengorō XVI, and the seal “Kansui” situates the piece firmly within his vivid, Edo‑inspired decorative style, all kept together with its tomobako.
