奥谷秋石 Okutani Shuseki (1871-1936)
He studied under 森寛斎 Mori Kansai (1814-1894) and established a robust painting style similar to 川端玉章 Kawabata Gyokusho's, while maintaining his master's emphasis on precise sketching. His style was classic but stable, and he left behind excellent works of landscapes and fishes, etc. He was one of the leading artists of the Kyoto art world during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.

This hanging scroll presents a tranquil landscape inspired by the legendary Red Cliffs, where steep mountains rise through mist and a small boat drifts quietly across the water. The composition captures a sense of poetic solitude and timeless grandeur, rendered in delicate brushwork and subtle tonal gradation. The artist, Okutani Shuseki (1871–1936), known for his classical yet stable style, signs the work as “Shuseki Dōjin” (秋石道人) with the seal “Shuseki” (秋石), reflecting his grounding in Kyoto painting traditions and his training under Mori Kansai.
