月岡耕漁 Tsukioka Kogyo (1869-1927) 'Nōgaku Zue 能楽図絵 (Noh Theatre Paintings)' Woodblock Prints Two Panels Folding Screens Byobu Room Dividers VB147

月岡耕漁 Tsukioka Kogyo (1869-1927)
Ukiyoe artist and Japanese-style painter from the Meiji and Taisho periods. Noh printmaker. A student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Ogata Gekko, and Matsumoto Fuko. He painted Noh plays based on stage scenery, and many of his works have the look of watercolor paintings, and are extravagant and elegant, using fine paper, paints, gold, and silver. His woodblock prints of Noh plays, "Nohgaku Hyakuban," "Nohgaku Zue," and "Nōga taikan" are well known.

A distinguished pair of folding screens featuring woodblock prints from Tsukioka Kogyo’s celebrated series “Nōgaku Zue” (Noh Theatre Paintings), published by Matsuki Heikichi. Kogyo (1869–1927), trained under Yoshitoshi, Ogata Gekkō, and Matsumoto Fūkō, became the foremost visual interpreter of Noh in the Meiji and Taishō eras. His works combine the lineage of ukiyo‑e with the elegance of Nihonga, capturing the ritualized gestures, richly layered costumes, and atmospheric stage settings that define classical Noh. The prints retain Kogyo’s signature watercolor‑like softness—subtle gradations, refined linework, and delicate color harmonies—while the screen format enhances their theatrical presence. Each panel presents a curated selection of scenes, allowing the viewer to appreciate the emotional range of Noh: solemnity, tension, quiet introspection, and ceremonial grace. As part of an interior, the screens introduce a sense of cultural depth and refined stillness, enriching the space with the dignified rhythm and timeless poise of Noh theatre.
