松林桂月 Matsubayashi Keigetsu (1876-1963)
Japanese painter. Born in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. His real name is Atsushi. His wife, Matsubayashi Settei, is also a Japanese painter. He is often referred to as ‘the last literati painter,’ and his work is characterised by meticulous and straightforward depictions rooted in the tradition of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan, while fully incorporating the popular style of modern sketching. His work is distinguished by a refined style underpinned by his knowledge of Chinese classics and poetry.

This hanging scroll by Matsubayashi Keigetsu (1876–1963), dated 1925 (乙丑), presents a serene spring mountain landscape rendered in delicate brushwork and soft coloration. Signed “Keigetsu sanjin Atsushi” (桂月山人篤) and sealed “Atsushi in” (篤印), the work reflects Keigetsu’s refined literati style, rooted in the traditions of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan. Born in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Keigetsu was deeply versed in Chinese classics and poetry, which informed his meticulous yet poetic compositions. Often referred to as “the last literati painter,” he blended classical sensibilities with modern sketching techniques, creating works that are both scholarly and visually elegant. The scroll is preserved in its original tomobako (storage box with inscription), affirming its authenticity and careful stewardship.
