歌川芳艶 Utagawa Yoshitsuya (1822-1866)
Ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period. A student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. He is the painter who inherited Kuniyoshi's talent for painting warriors the most. Inheriting the style of his master Kuniyoshi, Yoshitsuya's samurai paintings are so powerful that at times they almost surpass Kuniyoshi's work. He continued to paint until his death at the age of 45. Few of his works have been introduced in ukiyoe art books or exhibition catalogs, and it is believed that there are still many unidentified works.
