This hanging scroll is a refined late Edo period work by Hasegawa Gyokuho (1822–1879), a Kyoto-based painter of the Shijō school who studied under Matsumura Keibun and was renowned for his elegant flower-and-bird paintings. Set against a spacious and serene ground, a single rabbit is rendered with gentle brushwork and subtle ink gradations, capturing both the softness of its rounded form and the quiet alertness of its expression. The restrained composition, making full use of empty space, exemplifies the Shijō school’s balance of natural observation and refined aesthetics, allowing the subject to emerge with calm dignity and poetic presence. Signed “Gyokuho” and bearing the artist’s seal, the scroll is in condition appropriate to its age and is accompanied by a fitted storage box, making it a tasteful and contemplative work well suited to a tea room or traditional interior.
