Attached is a letter sent by a store in Osaka called Nishimatsu Shoten to Himuro Sakudayu 氷室作太夫, a Shinto priest of Tsushima Shrine 津島神社. The letter describes the artist and states that the painting was made at the age of 40, which is consistent with the date on the box. The postmark on the letter is 1927.
水田竹圃 Mizuta Chikuho (1883-1958)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and Showa periods. Born in Osaka. Studied under 姫島竹外 Himejima Chikugai (1840-1928). Since the first year of the Taisho era (1912), he has repeatedly been selected for the Bunten Exhibition. His work "Early Spring" won a special prize in 1916.
