Ito Shinsui 伊東深水
伊東深水 Ito Shinsui (1898-1972)
Ukiyoe artist, Japanese-style painter, and woodblock print artist of the Taisho and Showa periods. While working as a lithographer, he studied Japanese painting under Nakayama Shuko and later under Kaburaki Kiyokata. He is known for his genre paintings in the ukiyoe tradition, especially his paintings of beautiful women. He excelled in the depiction of beauty and painted healthy and cheerful pictures of beautiful women. He is also highly regarded outside of beauty painting, especially for his ambitious early landscape paintings. During the Taisho period, he painted illustrations and frontispiece, and also participated in the new printmaking movement, producing preparatory prints. He is a member of the Art Academy.
