丹羽廉芳 Niwa Renpo (1905-1993) Eihei-ji Japanese Zen kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / 円相 Enso 時雨洗紅葉 Shigure Koyowo Arau with Box RE406

円相 Enso
In Zen, it expresses 和 wa (harmony or peace). It has no beginning and end, you may judge as you like, it can be sometimes seen as moon. Enso is a circle that is hand drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.

時雨洗紅葉 Shigure Koyowo Arau
It evokes the scene of an autumn shower washing over the red leaves, making their colors appear even more vivid and beautiful. In a deeper Zen interpretation, it suggests that hardships and sorrows in life can also cleanse and refine the human heart, allowing a person to gain greater depth and inner brilliance.

丹羽廉芳 Niwa Renpo (1905-1993)
Niwa Renpo was a prominent Japanese Zen Buddhist priest of the Soto school. He served as the 77th Abbot of Eiheiji, one of the two head temples of the Soto Zen tradition, and later as the head of the Soto Zen school. He devoted himself to the promotion of Baika-style Buddhist hymns and to international Buddhist and religious exchange. During a pilgrimage to Europe, he also met with Pope John Paul II. He is remembered as one of the leading Soto Zen priests of postwar Japan.
