喜田華堂 Kida Kado (1802-1879)
Kishi school painter of the late Edo - Meiji periods. Born in Gifu Prefecture. He went to Kyoto and studied under Kishi school Ganku and Gantai Later, he started his own business as a painter in Nagoya. He was invited by the Nagoya clan and became an official painter.

Poised on a rugged rock, the tiger in this kakejiku turns its head downward with a sharp, penetrating gaze, its powerful body captured through bold, rhythmic brushwork that emphasizes both strength and alertness. The contrast between the richly inked stripes and the soft, atmospheric background heightens the sense of depth, allowing the animal’s presence to dominate the composition without overwhelming it. Subtle gradations in the fur and the confident handling of line give the figure a lifelike tension, while the surrounding negative space enhances the dramatic focus on the tiger’s stance. The scroll bears the signature and seal “Kadō” (華堂), reflecting the painter’s assured command of animal subjects within the Kishi‑school tradition.
