This Zen hanging scroll by Nishigaki Soko (1908–1985), former abbot of Shinjuan at Daitoku-ji Temple, features the powerful inscription “Hogejaku” (放下着)—a core Zen teaching meaning “cast off everything” or “let go of all attachments.” Boldly brushed in expressive calligraphy, the phrase invites deep reflection on the nature of liberation, urging one to release pride, regret, fixation, and preconception in pursuit of a mind free in the present moment. The scroll bears the signature “Zen Daitoku Soko” (前大徳宗興) and seals “Murasakino Daitoku” (紫野大徳) and “Soko” (宗興), affirming its origin within the Daitoku-ji Zen tradition. Housed in its original tomobako, the scroll shows stains and creases, consistent with age and use, adding to its contemplative character and historical depth.
