趙州露刃剣 寒霜光焔焔 更擬問如何 分身成両段
“Zhaozhou’s naked blade cuts through illusion with the clarity of frost and the fierce brilliance of flame; the moment one attempts to grasp it through thought or reasoning, the self is split in two.”

中原南天棒 Nakahra Nantenbo (1839-1925)
A Zen monk of the late Edo and Taisho periods. He is also known by another name, 白崖窟 Hakkeikutsu, but is more widely known as 南天棒 (Nantenbo). He is known as one of the most powerful monks of the Meiji period, who always carried a Nanten stick with him. He visited Zen temples all over the country and beat monks in training without mercy. He traveled all over the country, challenging even his masters to Zen battles. He went to as many as twenty-five dojos, and if he found someone inexperienced, he would beat him mercilessly with a Nantian stick. At a time when telephones and telegraphs were inadequate, rumors of the arrival of the Nantenbo had some people trembling with fear. He also devoted himself to teaching the laity, and his influence was felt by such figures as 山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu, 乃木希典 Nogi Maresuke, and 児玉源太郎 Kodama Gentaro.

with signature '83 years old Nantenbo' 八十三翁南天棒 and seal '83 years old Nantenbo' 八十三翁南天棒 'Toshu' 鄧州

The verse describing Zhaozhou’s blade cutting through illusion with the cold sharpness of frost and the flare of fire is written with the same uncompromising momentum that defined Nantenbō’s Zen, each character pushed forward by a brush that never hesitated, while the portrait of Nogi Maresuke beneath—drawn not by Nantenbō himself but by his disciple Hiramatsu Ryōkei—quietly recalls the long relationship between the monk and the general, for Nogi had sought Nantenbō’s guidance and was counted among those shaped by his fierce approach to training and spiritual discipline; the seals and the signature “Eighty‑three‑year‑old Nantenbō” anchor the work in his later years, and the scroll, heavily worn with stains, creases, tears, dirt, scribbling and other damage, is offered only because of the historical weight carried by both the calligraphy and the intertwined lives it evokes, with the understanding that the condition is extremely poor.
