乾々斎云鳳 Kenkensai Unpo / 牧野忠精 Makino Tadakiyo (1760–1831)
He is known by the artistic name Kenkensai, was the 9th lord of the Nagaoka Domain and a distinguished cultural figure of the late Edo period. Educated in Confucian learning and classical arts, he combined the responsibilities of high office—serving as Osaka Castle Magistrate, Kyoto Deputy, and later as a senior shogunate councilor—with a deep commitment to artistic and literary pursuits. As Kenkensai, he produced refined works in the literati tradition, especially ink paintings of bamboo, a subject he approached with disciplined brushwork, elegant restraint, and a scholarly sensibility. His treatise on bamboo painting, Bokuchiku Hatsumō, reflects both technical mastery and an intellectual approach to art. Makino also excelled in waka poetry and maintained close ties with major cultural circles of Kyoto. His artistic output embodies the cultivated ideals of an Edo-period daimyo: poised, contemplative, and grounded in classical aesthetics.

This hanging scroll by Kenkensai Unpo, the artistic name of Makino Tadakiyo (1760–1831), features a refined ink painting of bamboo in snow—a classical subject rendered with quiet dignity and literati elegance. The composition emphasizes contrast and restraint, with delicate brushwork capturing the weight of snow on slender leaves and stalks. Signed “Kenkensai” (乾々齋) and sealed “Unpo” (云鳳) and “Kenkensai” (乾々齋), the work reflects the artist’s scholarly sensibility and disciplined technique.
