A faint sense of morning humidity settles over the scene as the kingfisher pauses on an aged riverside stump, its blue‑green plumage set against the quiet bloom of white flowers that frame the composition with measured balance; the brushwork follows the Maruyama‑school clarity inherited by Imai Keiju (1891–1967), a Japanese‑style painter from Mie Prefecture active through the Taishō and Shōwa periods and known for his disciplined approach to kachōga, while the upper inscription carries his signature ‘Keiju’ and the seal ‘Ko in’, and the scroll is accompanied by its box, reflecting the care with which it has been kept, allowing the work’s calm presence to settle gradually into its surroundings and shape a gentle interval within the day.
