十時梅厓 Totoki Baigai (1749-1804) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Riverside Hermitage Landscape with Box - Appraised by Hirao Chikuka in 1922 RA650

十時梅厓 Totoki Baigai (1749-1804)
Nanga artist and Confucian scholar of the middle to late Edo period. Born in Osaka. Served the Ise-Nagashima clan as a Confucian official. Studied Confucianism under 伊藤東所 Ito Tosho (1730-1804), calligraphy under 趙陶斎 Cho Tosai (1713-1786), and painting under 皆川淇園 Minagawa Kien (1735-1807) and 池大雅 Ike no Taiga (1723-1776). He also excelled in seal engraving. He liked to drink and was open-minded without being concerned about details. People sometimes regarded him as a madman.
