奥原晴湖 Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913)
A female nanga artist of the Meiji era. At first, she studied painting under 牧田水石 Hirata Suiseki (1796-1869), later studied Ming and Qing painting in Edo, and became a private admirer of Zheng Banqiao (Zheng Xie). She painted with a manly and vigorous style, and her popularity was split in two with 安田老山 Yasuda Rozan (1830-1883) at the time of the popularity of literati painting in the early Meiji period. She was a woman of many anecdotes about her masculine appearance and personality, including her decision to cut her hair, which was unusual at the time.

The ink tones shift from pale washes to deeper gradients, giving the mountains and rivers a quiet chromatic rhythm that guides the eye toward the small arbor set along the water’s edge, a structure that anchors the scene without disturbing its calm flow; this measured handling of tonal variation reflects the practice of Okuhara Seiko (1837–1913), a prominent female nanga painter of the Meiji era who studied under Hirata Suiseki, immersed herself in Ming and Qing painting in Edo, and admired Zheng Banqiao, developing a vigorous style that stood alongside contemporaries such as Yasuda Rozan, while the scroll bears the signature ‘Tokai Seiko’ and the seal ‘Shusekisei Uni Kayogetsu’, allowing the landscape’s layered ink atmosphere to settle into a steady, contemplative presence over time.
