A painter of the late Edo period. Born in the first year of the Bunsei era. A pupil of Tanaka Buncho. Also studied under Okamoto Toyohiko and Suzuki Nanrei.

This striking hanging scroll by Yamagata Soshin (1818–1862), dated January 1852 (lunar calendar / 壬子孟春), presents a powerful and symbolic composition titled “Dragon Crossing Over Mount Fuji.” Rendered in expressive monochrome ink, the painting captures the majestic form of Mount Fuji rising through drifting mist, with the presence of a dragon suggesting themes of transformation, spiritual ascent, and natural force. Soshin, a pupil of Tanaka Buncho and later trained under Okamoto Toyohiko and Suzuki Nanrei, was active in the late Edo period and known for his refined brushwork and poetic landscapes. The scroll bears the signature “Soshin sha” (素眞 写) and seal “Soshin” (素眞), affirming its authenticity. It is accompanied by a preservation box, along with a fragment of paper stating that the scroll was once owned by Seifu Yohei III (1851–1914), the renowned Kyōyaki ceramic artist, adding valuable historical depth and provenance to this evocative work.
