岸竹堂 Kishi Chikudo (1826-1897)
Painter of the Kishi School. Studied under Kishi Renzan. Born in 1826 in what is now Shiga Prefecture. After studying traditional painting techniques of the Kano and Shijo schools, he became devoted to realism. He became absorbed in the theme of tigers and produced masterpieces. He was also a painter who gained international fame, winning high acclaim at the World's Fair held in the United States in the early Meiji period (1868-1912). Today, many of his works are held in museums and temples and boast high value.
