A tranquil and atmospheric hanging scroll by Hirai Baisen (平井楳仙), a Kyoto-based painter active during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, known for lyrical landscapes and seasonal themes. This work depicts the vivid autumn foliage of Rankyō Gorge — written as 嵐峡 — the scenic valley of Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most celebrated natural landmarks.
The composition features mist-veiled mountains, fiery maple trees, and a solitary boatman gliding across calm waters, evoking the quiet melancholy and beauty of late autumn. Baisen’s brushwork is delicate yet expressive, blending traditional nihonga techniques with a modern sensitivity to mood and atmosphere. The scroll is preserved in its original double box (tomobako), indicating careful archival storage and collector-grade presentation. A culturally rich and visually elegant piece for collectors of Japanese landscape painting, seasonal art, and Kyoto school works.
