木下逸雲 Kinoshita Itsuun (1800-1866)
Nanga painter of the late Edo period. He learned literati painting from 江稼圃 Ko Kaho / Jiang Jiapu of the Qing Dynasty (China) who came to Japan. He excelled in Sansui landscape and flower-and-bird paintings, and is called one of the three great literati painters in Nagasaki, along with 鉄翁祖門 Tetsuo Somon (1791-1872) and 三浦梧門 Miura Gomon (1808-1860). Itsuun was a fast painter and the opposite of Tetsuo who was a slow painter. He interacted with literati such as 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and 頼山陽 Rai Sanyo (1781-1832). He was a great admirer of 董其昌 Tokisho / Dong Qichang (1555-1636), a southern painter of the late Ming Dynasty. He painted lush landscape paintings.

with signature 'Itsuun' 逸雲 and Seal 'Bokusai no in' 木宰之印 'Azana Kosai' 字 公宰
Layered ink washes and crisp brushwork define this late‑Edo landscape by Kinoshita Itsuun (1800–1866), a leading Nanga painter of Nagasaki known for his swift, expressive style. Snow‑covered mountains rise in jagged tiers above winding rivers and a secluded country house, the composition unfolding with the literati elegance he absorbed from Ko Kaho, the Qing‑dynasty painter who taught him in Japan. Itsuun’s admiration for Dong Qichang appears in the rhythmic structure of the peaks and the balanced interplay between dense brush textures and open, atmospheric space. The scene carries both scholarly refinement and a sense of immediacy—qualities that distinguished Itsuun from contemporaries like Tetsuo Somon and Miura Gomon, with whom he is counted among the three great literati painters of Nagasaki. Dated 1862 (Jinju) and signed “Itsuun” with the seals “Bokusai no in” and “Azana Kosai”, the scroll reflects his mature hand and deep engagement with literati culture. Accompanied by its box, the work offers a serene yet dynamic vision of winter mountains. Within a collection or interior, it introduces a contemplative, scholarly atmosphere—its snowy landscape adding cultural depth and a quietly expansive presence to the surrounding space.
