Although it conveys the meanings of ‘softening’, ‘relaxing’ and ‘getting along’, in Zen, ‘wa’ transcends the mere notions of peace and harmony to embody a profound spiritual state. It is a term that encompasses a spirit of mutual respect; harmony between Buddhist teachings, one’s own mind and the surrounding environment; and a state of natural, unburdened tranquillity, free from attachment.

The single character Wa stands in a balanced tension between its broad central stroke and the supporting lines that frame it, giving the composition a poised structure that mirrors the Zen understanding of harmony as something steady rather than soft; this clarity of form aligns with the work of Kajiura Itsugai (1896–1981), abbot of Shogenji in Gifu, chief monk of the Myoshin‑ji school, and a figure who worked to bring Zen practice overseas, while the scroll bears the upper seal ‘Shobogen’ along with the signature ‘Myoshin Itsugai’ and the seals ‘Baijukuken’ and ‘Itsugai Sojitsu,’ and the piece is accompanied by its original box (Tomobako), allowing the character’s quiet equilibrium to settle into a calm, enduring presence.
