森徹山 Mori Tetsuzan (1775-1841)
Painter of the Mori and Shijo schools active in Osaka in the late Edo period. Son of Mori Shuho 森周峰. Learned Kano school from his father Shuho. He was adopted by his uncle Mori Sosen 森狙仙 and succeeded to the Mori school. He was especially good at animal paintings, and skillfully painted not only monkeys like Sosen, but also animals that are not often depicted. He became a pupil of Maruyama Okyo in his later years. One of the ten philosophies of the Okyo school.
with signature 'Tetsuzan' 徹山 and seal 'Morizane' 守真
This evocative pair of hanging scrolls by Mori Tetsuzan (1775–1841) presents a poetic nocturnal scene: a fox and a raccoon dog beneath the moonlight, each rendered with expressive brushwork and quiet sensitivity. The fox, alert and contemplative, and the raccoon dog, nestled in tall grass, are depicted in separate scrolls, yet together they form a harmonious dialogue of solitude and seasonal atmosphere. The soft moonlight and sparse foliage evoke the stillness of autumn night, a theme deeply rooted in Edo-period aesthetics. Tetsuzan, heir to the Mori school and a painter of the Shijō tradition, was renowned for his animal studies—extending beyond the monkeys favored by his uncle Mori Sosen to include less commonly portrayed creatures. His training under Maruyama Ōkyo added realism and depth to his compositions, while his lineage through the Kano school imbued his work with classical discipline. Each scroll bears the signature “Tetsuzan” (徹山) and seal “Morizane” (守真), affirming their authenticity. Together, they embody the refined naturalism and lyrical spirit of late Edo animal painting, ideal for contemplative display in a tea room or seasonal alcove.
