椿椿山 Tsubaki Chinzan (1801-1854)
He was a member of the shogunate's spear guards and excelled at riding swords and spears. He first studied painting under Kaneko Kinryo, and after his death studied under Watanabe Kazan, producing calm and elegant paintings of flowers, birds, and portraits. He was also well versed in haikai and sencha (Japanese tea ceremony), and was known as a master of the sho (Japanese bamboo flute).
with signature 'Chinzan sei tasuku' 椿山生弼 and seal 'Chinzan gaishi' 椿山外史 'Tasuku' 弼
A quiet refinement runs through this painting by Tsubaki Chinzan (1801–1854), where clusters of ripening nandina berries hang among slender branches and softly shifting leaves. A former retainer of the shogunate’s spear guards, Chinzan later devoted himself to painting under Kaneko Kinryō and Watanabe Kazan, developing a style known for its calm elegance and poised brushwork. In this scroll, the contrast between the vivid red berries and the muted foliage creates a gentle rhythm, while the composition’s vertical flow gives the subject a sense of dignified stillness. Signed “Chinzan sei tasuku” (椿山生弼) with seals including “Chinzan gaishi” (椿山外史) and “Tasuku” (弼), the work reflects the painter’s cultivated sensibility, shaped also by his deep engagement with haikai, sencha, and music. In an interior, the scroll adds a quiet clarity—the kind of understated presence that subtly steadies the room, giving the space a composed, almost meditative atmosphere without drawing attention away from its surroundings. The piece comes with a double box and has been carefully preserved.
