Or, referring to a person of long life themselves. This Zen phrase depicts auspicious clouds (auspicious clouds) surrounding Mount Jūzan, a symbol of longevity. This refined hanging scroll by Yokoi Myodo, former head priest of Nanshuji Temple in Sakai and a respected figure of the Daitokuji School, features the auspicious Zen phrase 瑞雲繞寿山 (Zuiun Juzan wo Meguru)—“Auspicious clouds circling Mount Juzan.” In Zen and tea ceremony contexts, this phrase evokes a scene of supreme blessing: 瑞雲 (zuiun) refers to clouds of fortunate omen, while 寿山 (juzan) symbolizes longevity or a venerable person. The imagery suggests a continuous flow of good fortune, harmony, and celebratory energy. Often chosen for display in tea gatherings or spiritual spaces, this calligraphy embodies the wish for enduring prosperity and peaceful longevity. The scroll bears the signature “Zendaitoku Syourin Myodo” (前大徳 少林 明堂) and seals “Syourin” (少林) and “Bunryo” (文憭), affirming its authenticity. Housed in its original box (tomobako), the work stands as a graceful expression of Zen aesthetics and ceremonial depth.
