浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Cherry Blossoms, Hydrangea, Peony RE531
浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846)
Literary painter of the late Edo period. Born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture) as the eldest son of Uragami Gyokudo. He traveled to Nagasaki and Kyoto, where he interacted with Rai Sanyo and Tanomura Chikuden. Unlike his father, he was known for his exquisite style of painting. He was specializing in flower-and-bird and landscape paintings. His style was clear and elegant. At the time, his works were more popular than those of his father Gyokudo.
Age: 1843 March / 癸卯 禊月
with signature 'Shunkin Kisen' 春琴紀選 and seal 'Kisen no in' 紀選之印 'Suian' 睡庵
This hanging scroll by Uragami Shunkin (1779–1846), a leading Bunjinga painter of the late Edo period, brings together cherry blossoms, hydrangea, and peony in a composition that feels both refined and quietly alive. The blossoms unfold along a twisting trunk with a natural, unforced rhythm: the pale cherry petals open lightly at the top, the rounded hydrangea clusters add gentle weight, and the peony blooms anchor the lower section with their fuller, more opulent form. Shunkin’s brushwork is crisp yet delicate, balancing fine ink lines with soft washes that give the flowers a sense of moisture and immediacy. The interplay of light and shadow is handled with remarkable clarity, allowing each species to retain its character while contributing to a harmonious whole. Signed “Shunkin Kisen” with his seals, the painting reflects the elegant, lyrical style for which he was admired even above his father Gyokudō. The scroll offers a serene and beautifully structured study of seasonal beauty, rendered with the quiet confidence of a master working at the height of his sensitivity.
