浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846)
Literary painter of the late Edo period. Born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture) as the eldest son of Uragami Gyokudo. He traveled to Nagasaki and Kyoto, where he interacted with Rai Sanyo and Tanomura Chikuden. Unlike his father, he was known for his exquisite style of painting. He was specializing in flower-and-bird and landscape paintings. His style was clear and elegant. At the time, his works were more popular than those of his father Gyokudo.

with signature 'Shunkin' 春琴 and seal 'Kisen' 紀選 "Hakukyo' 伯挙

A gentle clarity runs through this elegant flower‑and‑bird painting by Uragami Shunkin (1779–1846), where yellow chrysanthemums rise in full bloom beside slender orchid leaves, and a small bird perches lightly among the branches. As the eldest son of Uragami Gyokudō, Shunkin developed a style distinct from his father—clean, graceful, and exquisitely controlled—shaped by his travels to Nagasaki and Kyoto and his exchanges with Rai Sanyō and Tanomura Chikuden. The composition here reflects that refinement: crisp petals, soft washes of foliage, and a poised bird that brings a quiet liveliness to the scene. Signed “Shunkin” (春琴) with seals including “Kisen” (紀選) and “Hakukyo” (伯挙), the work shows the painter at his most delicate and assured. In an interior, the scroll introduces a gentle sense of order and freshness—the kind of subtle lift that comes from having a small, composed piece of nature nearby, giving the room a calmer and more attentive atmosphere. The piece comes with its box and has been carefully preserved.
