浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Two Sparrows Perched on Pomegranate Tree, Sparrow Chicks, Lily Flower with Box RE616

浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846)
Literary painter of the late Edo period. Born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture) as the eldest son of Uragami Gyokudo. He traveled to Nagasaki and Kyoto, where he interacted with Rai Sanyo and Tanomura Chikuden. Unlike his father, he was known for his exquisite style of painting. He was specializing in flower-and-bird and landscape paintings. His style was clear and elegant. At the time, his works were more popular than those of his father Gyokudo.

Age: 1833 November / 癸巳 黄鍾月
with signature 'Shunkin Kisen sha' 春琴紀選写 and seal 'Kisen no in' 紀選之印 'Suian' 睡庵

A quiet richness settles around this 1833 autumn work by Uragami Shunkin (1779–1846), where two sparrows rest on the arching branch of a pomegranate tree while a pair of chicks gather below. The red blossoms and swelling fruit introduce a gentle brightness, balanced by the cool presence of lilies rising near the rocks and the subtle movement of a small creature at the base. Each element feels placed with unhurried clarity—an elegance shaped by Shunkin’s literati training and the refined sensibility that made his flower‑and‑bird paintings more admired in his time than even those of his father, Gyokudō. The brushwork moves between firmness and softness: the pomegranate’s twisting branch, the delicate feathers of the sparrows, the crisp white of the lilies. His inscription “Shunkin Kisen sha” and seals “Kisen no in” and “Suian” appear with composed restraint, marking the piece as a mature work from the kigetsu month of 1833. Accompanied by its box, the scroll brings a warm, quietly animated presence into a room. Over time, it becomes more than a gathering of birds and blossoms; it becomes a gentle meditation on nurture, seasonality, and the clear, elegant vision that defines Shunkin’s art.
