Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period. Eleventh generation of the Nakahashi Kano family. He succeeded his elder brother, Kano Norinobu, and was favored by Prince Tokugawa Ieharu with the highest position as an inner painter of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

This powerful hanging scroll by Kano Yusei Terunobu (狩野祐清英信, 1717–1763) presents a dramatic Suiboku ink painting of a cloud-borne dragon, rendered with sweeping brushwork and atmospheric layering. The dragon coils through swirling mists, its expressive face and finely articulated claws emerging from the vapor with commanding presence. The composition balances dynamic movement with ethereal stillness, a hallmark of mid-Edo period ink painting. As the 11th-generation master of the Nakahashi Kano lineage, Terunobu held the prestigious role of inner painter to the Tokugawa Shogunate, and his works reflect the refined authority of the Kano school tradition. Signed “Terunobu ga” (英信画) and sealed “Terunobu” (英信), this scroll exemplifies the fusion of mythic symbolism and disciplined brush technique, offering a rare glimpse into the elite visual culture of Edo-period Japan.
